National Survey of Trainers

The National Survey of Trainers collects evidence on whether trainers consider that they are able to undertake their duties as trainers effectively, how these duties are formally recognised in their job plans and training, and how supported trainers feel in their role.

This survey has been developed in consultation with the Information Centre for Health and Social Care who considers the data collection to be useful and reasonable.

For the purposes of this survey, trainers are defined as:

  • All consultants;
  • All GP trainers; and
  • GPs with foundation doctors.

National Survey of Trainers: closing date extended to 15 June 2009

In order to maximise the response rate to this important piece of work and to ensure that every trainer has the chance to submit a survey return, PMETB has extended the closing date of the National Survey of Trainers until the 15th June 2009.

PMETB National Survey of Trainers closes within two weeks

All consultants and GP trainers that haven't yet made a submission to this year's survey are urged to do so as soon as possible. The survey closes on 31 May.

Subject to sufficient response rates from consultants and GP trainers, outputs from the trainers’ survey will provide PMET colleagues with an understanding of how training compares from one deanery to the next.

To consultants and GP trainers the survey results will illustrate how they and their trainees are performing and moreover, show the priority given to training within their organisation.

The outputs will, furthermore, complement the outputs of this year’s trainees’ survey and form a pivotal contribution to PMETB’s quality assurance of postgraduate medical training.

Spread the word
Please encourage any consultants or GP trainers you come in to contact with, to have their say and take part in this important piece of work before the closing date of 31 May 2009. This will allow the surveys team to work towards ensuring results are available via the PMETB surveys online reporting site in July 2009.

More consultant and GP trainer responses needed
Response rates to the National Survey of Trainers since its launch have not reached the levels we have anticipated by this stage. All consultants and GP trainers are required to submit an entry to ensure that we are able to report the results by hospital.

Why every submission counts
By completing the survey you will ensure that we can:

  • provide a report on training in particular specialties, deaneries and NHS organisations
  • help employers compare their training standards against others, enabling employers to see where there may be shortfalls in the service
  • give consultants the chance to voice their concerns at local and national levels

However this use of trainers' survey data will only be possible if enough trainers send us their responses. Please ensure that you and those trainers around you, complete a survey return form as soon as possible.

By completing a return you ensure that the returns your colleagues have made are usuable. It only works if enough people complete.

Information on the current survey (as at 15 April 2009)
