Generic standards for training is a key component of the Quality Framework which set out the standards by which all training should be assessed.
The standards must be applied wherever postgraduate medical education and training takes place, including the National Health Service, other service providers and the independent sector. Any additional provision of training outside NHS institutions, but forming part or whole of a programme arranged/agreed by the postgraduate dean (e.g. in the independent sector or elsewhere), will be subject to these standards.
These standards have been designed to run alongside the Standards for curricula and assessment systems – July 2008 and the Standards for deaneries – July 2008.
This is the revised version of the Generic standards for training document following the Board’s decision to review all existing documents to ensure that all of our statutory objectives and functions are translated into one of four categories: principles; standards; requirements; or guidance.
Important point to note: Deaneries and local education providers, working with Royal Colleges and Faculties, remain in the position that they do not have to be fully compliant with the standards for trainers – incorporated in the Generic standards for training - until January 2010.
